2019 Empower U GEAR UP Camp Mentor Application (Gonzaga)

Are you a current undergraduate student who is interested in working with high school students by inspiring them to continue pursuing education after high school and enjoy life on a college campus? We have an amazing opportunity for you! The Washington State GEAR UP program is seeking 8 current Gonzaga students to serve as mentors for our summer camp. The camp will take place at Gonzaga University from June 18th - 21st.

Position Expectations:

  • Stay in the same dorms as students to provide supervision and mentoring support. Lead a small group of students for breakout and team building activities.
  • Support and encourage students to fully participate in camp activities. Keep students on task.
  • Assist in planning and leading some free time activities – such as a campus tour and a discussion about life in college. You may be asked to sit on a student panel, where you answer questions about your own college experience.
  • Provide support to chaperones and GEAR UP staff by assisting with supervision.
  • Duty hours: Mentors should expect to be on duty from arrival to lights out on June 18th, from wake up to lights out on June 19th and 20th, and from wake up to student departure on June 21st. More information about specific duty hours is to come.
  • Participate in a mentor orientation on June 18th, prior to student arrival.
  • Mentors are expected to participate in a debrief webinar to take place at a to-be-determined time in the week following the camp.

Position Qualifications:

  • Experience volunteering or working with high school students.
  • Enthusiasm for and a genuine interest in working with youth.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model.
  • Skills: leadership, responsibility, patience, dependability, maturity, integrity, ability to work well with a team, positive attitude.
